A little person in the wild unconscious.

I was a big fan of Jung when I was young. The collective unconscious. Archetypes. Mythical beasties. Alchemical secrets. The wonderfully strange world of psychology and symbolism. It made me want to plunge into my mind and see what there was to discover.

Jung himself embarked on a similar journey, and recorded the whole trip in a mysterious Red Book. The book was so controversial that it was kept under wraps for decades. It was opened to the public a few months ago, and since then, the New York Times has been going head over heals. First a write up in the magazine, then a book review (in the holiday section no less), and now an exhibit.

The weight of these articles alone is enough to make the journal a legendary tome of cosmic magnificence and grandiose import. Which indeed it is… but that makes me all the more happy that the book is full of technocolor doodles. It gives a new life and a secret history to doodlers everywhere. Who knew that a rainbow of Sharpies could produce uncanny anticipations of New Age folk art?
