Since I’ve been here I’ve been a little homesick, so I augmented my friendships from DC with Dubai Dopplegangers. People here in Dubai who remind me of my friends back home. There’s Edgar Ali, who is a chef in a trailer-sized restaurant right on Jumeriah beach who will make you whatever the fishermen walk over to him — if you’re lucky enough find an unoccupied nylon web and plastic folding chair. And Bashar Brad, who takes pictures of the city’s unseen graffiti and laborers. So imagine my shock when I learned that the actual Adrian Fenty just came back from a week’s vacation in Dubai. But he too has a Dubai Doppleganger: United Arab Emirates Ambassador Yousef Al Otaiba!
