Last week, we blogged about the release of Playstation’s Little Big Planet. The offical release date was set for Friday but was delayed after players recognized verses of the Qur’an in the game’s background music. The music will be changed for a later release date, but the incident has already spun off a slew of discussion. Malian artist Toumani Diabate, who contributed the soundtrack, defended his musical choice in an interview with MTV. And the American Islamic Forum for Democracy asks why the music will be censored. The overriding question is how offensive is the inclusion. The Qur’an does not explicitly prohibit mixing with music, but some Muslim groups frown on the practice. It’s fascinating that a game about world creation has sparked reexamination of a holy text. For such a little big planet, it sure has stirred up a big little issue.
